Alternative therapies recommended for IBS

Natural therapies for IBSGastroenterologists’ standard guidelines for dealing with irritable bowel syndrome have been expanded to include nutritional supplements and alternative therapies, it has emerged.

The recommendations, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, take the place of a 2002 document and expand the list of treatment options, HealthDay News reports.

For example, they suggest that patients may benefit from taking probiotics, which are aimed at promoting the growth of “good” bacteria in the gut.

Nutritional supplements containing fiber or peppermint oil are mentioned as potential remedies for some people, while Chinese herbal supplements and therapies such as acupuncture may also produce benefits.

The University of Michigan Health System also has some lifestyle recommendations for IBS sufferers.

Experts there suggest that limiting gas-producing foods – which may include beans, onions and cabbage – can help people avoid suffering IBS symptoms.

They may also want to steer clear of carbonated drinks and large quantities of sugar. And some people could try to avoid dairy products to see if their symptoms subside, as lactose intolerance is fairly common among IBS sufferers.
