Study: Vitamin D can benefit colon health

Colon health can be improved by nutritional supplementsLately, a number of studies have been touting the benefits of nutritional supplements containing vitamin D.

Now, the latest looks at how a person’s level of vitamin D is linked with colon health, finding significant benefits to high consumption of the vitamin.

Research published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention shows that high levels of circulating vitamin D and higher intake are both associated with a decrease in colorectal polyps, CancerConsultants.com reports.

The scientists analyzed a total of 17 previous studies that focused on vitamin D and found that subjects with the highest levels of the vitamin in circulation were 30 percent less likely to develop polyps compared with those who had the lowest levels.

Meanwhile, people who consumed the most vitamin D were found to be 10 percent less likely to have polyps.

Previous studies have also looked into the effect of the sunshine vitamin on colon health and colon cancer.

For example, researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Harvard School of Public Health discovered that people who take high levels of vitamin D were less likely to die of colon cancer than those whose levels were low.
