Study suggests milk may be a weapon in the fight against obesity

Study suggests milk may be a weapon in the fight against obesityIn another example of how a small change can make a big difference, researchers have found that those who try to lose or control their weight should reach for fat free-milk rather than a fruit drink in the morning.

Australian scientists enrolled 34 overweight but healthy individuals in the study and conducted two testing sessions – one in which the participants were served about 20 ounces of fat-free milk, and one in which they drank the same amount of a fruit drink.

They found that compared with a fruit drink, having skim milk at breakfast helped increase the feelings of fullness, and resulted in an intake of about 50 calories less at lunch.

Milk’s protein content may be responsible for this outcome, they further speculate, given that it provides 16 percent of the daily value per cup.

Health practitioners have also recommended the alkaline diet for those struggling to shed pounds. It is rich in citrus fruits, vegetables, tubers, nuts and legumes, and it has the added benefit of boosting bone health into old age.
