Although that are found in green tea offer an array of health benefits, a new study is suggesting it may also decrease an individualÂ’s risk for developing glaucoma, in addition to improving metabolism and heart health.
According to findings published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers discovered that an antioxidant found in green tea can be absorbed by the lens, retina and eye tissues, effectively preventing the eye from visual disease.
Despite there being some indication that the antioxidants known as catechins found in green tea are the same that could be beneficial to eye health, studies were not able to pinpoint whether or not the nutrient passes from the stomach and gastrointestinal tract into the eye tissues.
The researchers believe this could be a breakthrough for helping to prevent common eye diseases such as glaucoma, which generally progresses with age.
“Our results indicate that green tea consumption could benefit the eye against oxidative stress [for up to 20 hours per consumption],” the researchers concluded.
