Older individuals may want to consider taking such as Ginkgo Biloba, which doctors believe can help with memory retention, as a new study is suggesting that the neurological disease, dementia, could potentially become an epidemic among the elderly.
According to findings published in the Annals of Neurology, dementia is prevalent in 18.2 percent of people who are over 90 years old. These findings are large, considering that the brain disease affects between 6 to 10 percent of individuals over the age of 65.
Researchers examined approximately 770 individuals and found that 140 eventually developed dementia, with 60 percent of those cases being attributed to Alzheimers disease. Researchers noted that this occurrence became a higher problem with age.
“Our findings show dementia incidence rates almost double every five years in those 90 and older,” said the studys lead author, Maria Corrada.
It was found that individuals who were over 100 years old had a 40.7 percent risk of developing the neurological disease right before their death.
This study is one of the first of its kind to examine participants who are that high in age.
