However, new research reveals that women may not be as prepared as men when it comes to menopause-related sexual symptoms.
A poll conducted by Harris Interactive asked 705 adults aged between 50 and 70 about their experiences with hormonal changes and diminished sex drive as they grew older.
Some 67 percent of female reported that they have experienced symptoms that interfered with a healthy sex life and, among these, 65 percent said they were surprised by the symptoms.
Among the issues cited by women include vaginal dryness, reduced libido and pain during intercourse.
Around 55 percent of women said they had sought treatment for their symptoms. Herbal supplements were cited as one possible remedy they had tried.
Commenting on the findings, Dr. David B. Schwartz of Christ Hospital in Cincinnati suggested that women need access to more health resources as they face hormonal changes.
“Most women face sexual symptoms as they go through menopause, with less information readily available to them,” he remarked.
There is no set age for menopause to begin, but many women begin noticing symptoms in their late 40s or early 50s.
