More health benefits from fruits and vegetables

A new study indicates that consuming the greens and reds may help protect pregnant women against upper respiratory tract infections (URTI).

Researchers believe that eating fruits and veggies may boost pregnant women’s immunity against the common cold and sinus infections.

At the Boston University School of Medicine, scientists examined 1,000 pregnant women and found that those who consumed the most fruits and vegetables were 26 percent less likely to develop a URTI.

Women who consumed higher levels of these foods were taking in 6.71 servings per day as opposed to the recommended five, and it is believed that this also helped reduce their risk.

Senior study author Dr Martha M. Wexler explained “Pregnant women may require more fruits and vegetables than usual because of the extra demands on the body,” and these extra servings helped enhance their immunity.

Earlier this month, the American Dietetic Association released information that suggested vegetarian diets are beneficial for adults and children, but also help prevent diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

For women to further enhance their overall health and immune systems while pregnant, they may want to consider taking nutritional supplements.
