Moderate drinking ‘does not cause irregular heartbeat in women’

Low-level drinking may not cause irregular heartbeatWomen who drink up to two alcoholic beverages per day may not be more likely to suffer from an irregular heartbeat, new research suggests.

However, any more than two each day may up your chances of developing the condition, scientists warned in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A study of more than 34,000 healthy women aged 45 and older indicated that those who enjoyed either one or two daily drinks did not increase their risk of atrial fibrillation.

In this condition, the upper chambers of the heart begin beating irregularly and more quickly than normal. It can lead to blood clots and – if untreated – even a stroke.

“Atrial fibrillation is becoming more common. It occurs in about 1 percent of people up to the age of 80 and it can cause significant symptoms in those who have it,” Christine M. Albert of Harvard Medical School told HealthDay News.

In fact, some experts suggest that people who are looking out for their heart should incorporate red wine into their health resources.

A large body of research has connected the polyphenols in red wine with a healthy cardiovascular system.
