Fruits and veggies can help vision

Eat fruits, veggies and nuts for your eyesBoosting the amount of fruits and vegetables a person consumes on a daily basis may help them fight off a common eye disease, scientists say.

Scientists at the University of Liverpool are urging people to increase the levels of fruits, vegetables and nuts they incorporate into everyday meals in order to help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Professor Ian Grierson, head of ophthalmology at the university, estimates the incidence of AMD could be reduced by as much as 20 percent if people changed their diets to consume more of these foods.

For those whose eyesight has already begun to deteriorate, further problems could also be slowed, he says.

Grierson has written a cooking guide to help people do so, called Fruit for Vision. It is aimed at boosting the vitamin, antioxidant and nutrient content of every meal.

“If we can improve the kind of food that we eat, we could dramatically reduce the number of people who may suffer from eye diseases in the future,” Grierson says.

Another way to increase the nutritional content of your daily diet is by using nutritional supplements.
