Fast food linked to higher stroke risk

Neighborhoods with fast food restaurants have more strokesIf you are already a fan of nutritional supplements and natural foods, you may also be aware of the potentially detrimental effects of consuming a fast food diet.

Now, scientists have uncovered yet another link between fast food and poor health. A study presented at the American Stroke AssociationÂ’s International Stroke Conference says neighborhoods with a higher volume of fast food outlets tend to also have more strokes.

According to the researchers, residents of neighborhoods with the most fast food restaurants were at a 13 percent higher risk of stroke than those in areas with the lowest concentration.

Risk tended to increase approximately 1 percent with the addition of each fast-food outlet, they said.

“The data show a true association,” commented Dr. Lewis B Mortgenstern, lead author of the study and professor at the University of Michigan.

However, the researchers caution that the link has not yet been explained, as they are not sure if fast food has increased the risk of stroke or if unhealthy neighborhoods are more likely to have these types of restaurants.

Previous research has also linked a Mediterranean-style diet to a lower chance of suffering a stroke.
