Doctors May Not Follow FDA Warnings

Doctors should do proper screenings before prescribing pillsNew research indicates that doctors are not carefully monitoring antipsychotic drugs, which can ultimately cause high blood pressure and cholesterol levels in some patients.

According to research presented in the Archives of General Psychiatry, it was found that many doctors ignore the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning when prescribing antipsychotic drugs to their patients. The FDA suggests medical professionals should screen their patients to be sure they aren’t at risk for side effects of certain medication.

After reviewing 109,000 instances, it was found that the majority of doctors do not alter their level of screening for cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Researchers suggest that glucose and blood lipid testing should take place before patients are placed on these kinds of medications to avoid any harmful side effects. The scientists also suggest patients should ask their healthcare professionals about the kind of screening they’ve had, hopefully to cause doctors to pay more attention.
