A gel is currently in the process of being tested to see if it can effectively provide a libido boost to post-menopausal women.
Known as Libigel, women rub the testosterone-based product into their upper arm every morning, a process which delivers the hormone into the bloodstream.
Testosterone is naturally produced by the ovaries and is viewed as playing a key role in libido for both genders.
Commenting on the Libigel tests, Dr. Frank Morgan, whose practice is involved in the trial, told McClatchy-Tribune News Services that womens loss of libido has long been overlooked by the medical community.
“There is a real unmet need here. There is no one simple answer for women, but the hope is that this will be a safe treatment that can help a certain number of them,” he told the news provider.
Women who are experiencing problems with a loss of sex drive may already be taking nutritional supplements that aim to balance their estrogen levels.
During menopause, many women experience a range of symptoms as a result of hormonal fluctuations. These may include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, vaginal dryness and thinning of the bones.
