Compound related to Vitamin A may inhibit early MS

Compound related to Vitamin A may inhibit early MSScientists have found that AM80, a retinoid related to vitamin A, may become a new tool in the fight against the ravages of multiple sclerosis (MS).

In MS the immune system attacks the central nervous system, preventing communication between nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, and leading to progressive disability. The process is facilitated by a type of immune cells called Th17 T.

However, the study by Japanese researchers from National Institute of Neuroscience in Tokyo, which used mouse model of MS, found that AM80 inhibited Th17 T cell function without blocking the immune system.

They concluded that the compound has a potential to become “a considerable intervention strategy for the acute phase of Th17-mediated autoimmune diseases such as MS.”

In fact, while the treatment was effective in inhibiting early symptoms of MS it did not prevent chronic symptoms.

Those who would like to boost their overall health and reduce the risk of disease may turn to nutritional supplements which contain vitamin A.
