Wisdom of eating egg yolk ‘depends on cholesterol level’

Do you eat the yolk or just the white?Over the past few years, eggs have been both maligned for containing cholesterol and praised as a healthy and protein-packed breakfast option.

Writing in the Chicago Sun-Times, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen say that whether or not you should eat the yolk of the egg depends on your cholesterol level.

People who have a cholesterol reading under 200, as well as an LDL cholesterol level under 100, can enjoy the nutritional benefits that come from the entire egg, the doctors advise.

“Eggs are an almost-perfect food,” they write. “The quality of their protein is second only to breast milk and the sight-saving lutein in the yolk is more readily ferried into your blood stream than lutein from most other foods.”

However, if your cholesterol level is high, you may be best off eating only the white or limiting consumption to two eggs per week, according to Oz and Roizen. This is because the yolk contains a lot of cholesterol and a significant amount of saturated fat.

People who are looking for alternative ways to meet their allowance for vitamin D may wish to try nutritional supplements.
