Taking vitamin D nutritional supplements may help the body fight off colds and the flu, scientists say.
According to a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, low levels of vitamin D are linked to a higher incidence of respiratory infections.
Researchers from the University of Colorado-Denver School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and Childrens Hospital Boston looked at data from nearly 19,000 patients to reach their conclusions.
They determined that those with the lowest levels of vitamin D in the blood were 40 percent more likely to have reported a recent infection, compared with those who had the highest levels.
Lead author Dr. Adit Ginde said the results “support an important role for vitamin D” to prevent cold and flu, but that more studies are needed.
“While its too early to make any definitive recommendations, many Americans also need more vitamin D for its bone and general health benefits,” he added.
Boosting levels of vitamin D through nutritional supplements or other means has been linked to a number of other benefits, including increased dental health and a lower risk of dementia.
