Studies Find Health-Boosting Antioxidants In Many Surprising Places

At their root, the benefits of antioxidants stem from their ability to reduce the damage caused by free radicals in the body. These nutrients can be found in nutritional supplements and natural foods, including pecans.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that a diet containing a significant amount of pecans can temporarily double the body’s levels of vitamin E, a common antioxidant. Likewise, researchers noted that eight hours after eating pecans, the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, in the blood appeared to dip by one-quarter.

Other recent research has determined that substances like dark chocolate, lavender oil and roasted coffee contain significant amounts of antioxidants.

In essence, antioxidants prevent free radicals, which are charged particles in the body, from interacting with human cells. This interaction can damage crucial molecules, leaving cells open to certain disease, the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) states.

By taking nutritional supplements that contain beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins C and E, individuals who are concerned about oxidative damage may be able to rest a little easier.
