Anyone who is trying to stick to a healthy diet or lower their blood sugar naturally already knows to avoid sweet treats such as candy and cakes.
But what if you learned that your everyday breakfast cereal contains as much sugar as a glazed donut?
A new study by Consumer Reports warns that 11 popular cereal choices contain more than 12 grams of sugar per serving making them more than 40 percent sugar by weight.
The two worst choices were revealed to be Post Golden Crisp and Kelloggs Honey Smacks, which contain more than 50 percent sugar by weight.
Consumer Reports medical advisor Dr. Orly Avitzur told WebMD that these poor diet choices are linked to other health concerns.
“Americans are consuming about 15 percent more added sugars than they did 25 years ago and over that time the percentage of overweight or obese adults has grown from 47 percent to 66 percent,” he explained.
Obesity is defined by a body mass index of 30 or above, while overweight adults have an index of 25 to 29.9.
Only four cereals were judged to be “very good” by the Consumer Reports judges. Cheerios, Kix, Life and Honey Nut Cheerios were singled out for their low-sugar, high-fiber content.
