Scientists have discovered a new gene that is usually studied by cancer researchers which could lead to diabetes development.
According to a study found in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the gene PFKFB3, which may be what causes the disease, regulates the metabolism. If the gene becomes unable to process food, this could lead to health complications in an individual.
While some people believe diabetes is a direct result of obesity, it is actually caused by a buildup of glucose in the blood due to a metabolic block. This is what the PFKFB3 gene regulates.
Scientists are currently looking for ways to change an individuals diet that will help keep the gene working properly. The researchers feel that improving ones food intake may work as a diabetes natural remedy.
Co-author Dr. Chaodong Wu is in the process of looking for nutrients in various foods that will have a bigger effect on the gene.
“First we will need to identify what effective compounds will trigger the gene to regulate metabolism,” Wu said. “Then we need to determine what combinations within foods are more effective.”
In the meantime, Wu suggests healthy foods such as fish, as they offer multiple health benefits.
