Certain individuals may be allergic to some plant-based extracts and oils, but there are some extracts that naturally irritate human skin. Research has found that more than one plant-based substance besides urushiol, the much-hated compound in poison ivy can cause intense itching. Fortunately, other extracts and nutrients found in vitamin supplements can soothe itches.
A study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience found that between 5 and 20 percent of the tactile nerves in the skin are sensitive to histamine, the body’s itch signalling molecule. The report noted that many plants can trigger the sensation, such as cowhage. Also known as velvet bean or cowitch, the plant is well known for its ability to cause itching.
However, researchers also found that wasabi, the spicy green paste used on sushi, can stimulate itching in the skin’s appropriately named wasabi receptors.
However, hope is not lost for individuals the love the hot Asian garnish. By taking dietary supplements containing vitamin E, or even applying an oil full of the nutrient directly to the skin, itchiness can be gradually reduced.
