PCOS sufferers may benefit from acupuncture, exerciseAccording to a new study, exercise and electro-acupuncture can reduce sympathetic nerve activity in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and reduce the risk of developing metabolic disorders that frequently accompany the condition.

The study conducted by Swedish scientists included 20 women who were divided into three groups – one receiving low-frequency electro-acupuncture, one engaging in exercise, and an untreated control group.

The results suggest acupuncture led to more regular menstrual cycles, reduced testosterone levels and reduced waist circumference, while exercise helped reduce in weight and body mass index.

Women with PCOS often have elevated sympathetic nerve activity which may lead to hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, obesity and cardiovascular disease, and the importance of the study is that it shows the usefulness of exercise and acupuncture in reducing its activity.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder, affecting up to 10 percent of women of childbearing age and stems from elevated levels of androgens which may lead to ovarian cysts, irregular menstrual cycles and infertility.

Women who suffer from painful periods have a range of natural health resources to choose from, including Epsom salts baths, as well as nutritional supplements with fish oil and magnesium which relaxes the uterine muscles, according to RecipeForHealth, a natural health blog.
