Monounsaturated Fats Can Help Improve Cholesterol Levels

Monounsaturated Fats Can Help Improve Cholesterol LevelsA new study has found that monounsaturated fats (MUFA) can help improve cholesterol levels in some individuals.

The research, published in Canadian Medical Association Journal, indicated that the risk for individuals to develop cardiovascular disease is greater when there are low HDL-C levels and high LDL-C levels. For people to maintain healthy amounts of these levels, they could consume a Mediterranean diet, which contains MUFAs.

Researchers examined 24 patients who were assigned to either a low or high MUFA diet. In the group that had a greater amount of MUFA intake, the scientists also substituted sunflower oil, instead of 13 percent more carbohydrates.

Healthy foods concentrated with MUFAs that the participants consumed included eggplant, okra, almonds, oats and barley.

The group that added more MUFAs to their diet were able to increase their HDL-C levels. As a result, the scientists suggested that MUFAs could lower a person’s cholesterol. The researchers also noted that individuals could improve their cholesterol through other natural means, such as exercising.

Eating other foods that contain MUFAs, like whole grain wheat, oatmeal, safflower or avocado oil may help individuals who need to improve their cholesterol levels.
