Young adults who suffer from hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, might consider taking extra precautions in their overall wellbeing as a study suggests they may be more susceptible to suffering a stroke.
According to research published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, patients with an overactive thyroid between the ages of 18 to 44 have a 44 percent increased risk of having a stroke.
Although researchers found that of the 28,584 patients they studied, 198 had a stroke within five years, the scientists still called for more evidence before they could make a direct link between the condition and the potentially life-threatening episode.
“Hyperthyroidism may be associated with various syndromes or conditions linked to cerebrovascular disease in young adults,” researcher Dr. Herng-Ching Lin said. “However, only case reports or case series were found in the literature, and the causal relationships could not be established.”
Some physicians believe that including fish oil and ginkgo may potentially lower an individuals risk for a stroke.
