As cold and flu season approaches, you may be reaching for the nutritional supplements to help stave off illness and boost your immunity.
Dr. David Rakel, director of the University of Wisconsin Center for Integrative Medicine, told ABC News about some of the steps he takes to stay healthy.
For example, to help prevent a cold, he tries to avoid stress, washes his hands frequently and eats “multicolored whole foods that were recently alive or came out of the ground.”
If cold symptoms do arise, Rakel responds by drinking a large amount of green tea and several glasses of orange juice. Taking vitamin C nutritional supplements is a common tactic for helping fight the early stages of a cold.
Rakel told the news provider that he also consumes 20 to 30 mg of zinc acetate twice a day with the aim of improving his immunity. Meanwhile, he occasionally takes 400 mg of an herb known as andographis three times a day.
Those looking for an additional way to boost their immunity may want to try an alkaline diet, which helps restore a bodys pH balance.
