Combining the herbal supplement tea tree oil with silver nitrate may provide greater antiseptic benefits than either compound on their own, scientists from the University of Wolverhampton are reporting.
Earlier studies have linked silver nitrates and tea tree oil with anti-microbial properties, but researchers found that by suspending the two together, they were able to increase the benefits in minimizing staph and other infections that can infect wounds.
Side effects of silver, such as casting a bluish tint to the skin, and irritiation linked to tea tree oil were minimized by using the suspension, the study found.
Lead author Wan Li Low and his cohorts are hopeful that the study may provide benefits and remain safer than current therapies for those who suffer from sores while bedridden, as well as those who have chronic leg ulcers and other open wounds.
Previous research has linked silver to a benefit in alleviating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, with a study from the University of Southampton indicating that some silver-based rings may reduce a common deformity in those with arthritis.
