Anyone who has ever flown halfway around the world recognizes how symptoms of jet lag can linger, interfering with various aspects of your daily life.
Now, the findings of a new study may provide some relief for those who take long-haul flights.
Italian researchers discovered that travelers who took pine bark extract (brand name Pycnogenol) before flying were able to tone down the intensity of their symptoms.
Participants took 50 milligrams the extract every day for week beginning two days before they embarked on a long flight. Their results were compared to those of a control group.
The scientists found that those who consumed the extract reduced their experience of fatigue, grogginess and insomnia by around 56 percent two days after taking the flight.
In addition, these people found their symptoms lasted around 18.2 hours, while the others symptoms remained for an average of 39.3 hours.
Then, using a brain scan, the researchers further discovered that subjects taking Pycnogenol had less brain swelling and fewer memory problems than the control group.
Pycnogenol herbal supplements are claimed to improve circulation and offer antioxidant effects as well.
