Doctors: Cell phones can cause allergies

Cell phones may cause an allergic reactionIt seems that chatting away for hours on a cell phone could have other physical repercussions beyond a sore ear.

Some frequent talkers are at risk of suffering an allergic reaction to the nickel surface on mobile phones, according to the British Association of Dermatologists.

After noting a number of published cases describing an explained rash on a patient’s face and ear, the association determined the cause of the problem and termed it “mobile phone dermatitis.”

Dr Graham Lowe of the BAD said that those who are allergic to nickel are most at risk.

“In mobile phone dermatitis, the rash would typically occur on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin,” he explained.

It is even possible for such an allergy to appear on an allergic person’s fingers if they are fans of text messaging, he added.

Allergies are not the only concern to be raised in recent months regarding the potential health impact of cell phone use.

Last month, a congressional subcommittee heard testimony from several experts who questioned the safety of the devices, particularly with regard to children.
