Could your inhaler pose a health risk to your heart?

Inhalers linked to heart health problemsInhalers are usually thought of as a health aid, helping people who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) breathe more easily.

However, new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has linked inhalers with an increased risk of heart attack and death from cardiovascular problems.

People with COPD have narrowed lung airways and excessive mucus that results in symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. Inhaled anticholinergics help relax the muscles around constricted airways so that people can breathe more easily.

The study looked at two common drugs: tiotropium, which is marketed as Spiriva Handihaler, and ipratopium, sold as Atrovent.

Researchers found that participants who used either treatment for over one month elevated their risk of fatal and nonfatal heart problems by 58 percent.

Lead author Dr. Sonal Singh of Wake Forest University’s medical school, suggested that COPD patients who use inhalers may want to undertake measures to protect their hearts, such as quitting smoking, lowering blood pressure and reducing cholesterol.

One way to help support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol is by taking Oral Chelation, which may also improve circulation.
