Cherries may alleviate inflammation and stiffness of arthritis

Cherries may alleviate inflammation and stiffness of arthritis Taking a closer look at diet and lifestyle may be useful for the management of arthritis-related inflammation, stiffness and pain.

In particular, there is evidence showing that tart cherries may play a role in reducing the pain of arthritis, based on a review of studies published over the years in scientific publications such as Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine, Journal of Nutrition and Behavioral Brain Research.

Scientists believe compounds called anthocyanins – also responsible for cherries’ red color – account for this anti-inflammatory benefit.

“Often, my clients ask what they can do to manage arthritis pain without medications,” says Leslie Bonci, director of Sports Nutrition in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

“For many arthritis sufferers, what they eat may help dramatically reduce their arthritis-related pain,” she adds.

In addition to eating red cherries, Bonci’s tips for everyday natural management of arthritis include staying properly hydrated, introducing omega-3 fatty acids into the diet as well as gentle stretching that may increase comfort and lessen pain and stiffness.

Those who are concerned about not getting enough anti-inflammatory compounds from their diet may turn to nutritional supplements.
