Nutritional supplements containing a range of important vitamins have been shown to be effective for a number of health conditions and now scientists suggest they could now help some people to regain their hearing.
Researchers at the University of Michigan are developing a pill that they suggest could reverse hearing injury, as long as it is administered within three days of damage from a loud noise, the Daily Mail reports.
The scientists explain that noise-related injuries are the most common type of hearing damage. Exposure to loud noise affects the hair cells in the ear, which do not regrow thus, hearing is diminished.
The idea behind the nutritional supplements is that antioxidants are able to enter the bloodstream to combat free radicals released by noise vibrations.
These free radicals are what the researchers suspected were responsible for the hair cell damage.
It is currently still under development, but the scientists say the pill will likely contain betacarotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and magnesium.
