Among the many natural health resources, Ayurveda, which is part of the Indian medicine tradition, has been recommended as a good alternative for those who suffer from digestive problems.
With some of its elements developed as much as 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda offers holistic medicines to help alleviate common intestinal and digestive problems, using natural herbal remedies and essential oils to help restore the body to a balanced state.
One of such ancient formulas specifically designed for maintaining proper digestive health is Triphala, a mixture containing equal proportions of three different fruits Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula and Terminalia bellirica. It is also a rich source of vitamin C.
“Faulty digestion is the number one cause of disease and the preparation helps restore digestion by strengthening the liver function, cleansing the gall bladder, normalizing stomach acids, strengthening the peristaltic action of the GI musculature and alleviating constipation,” says Pamela D. Palmer, CEO of ElanVeda, the maker of Triphala.
Ayurveda is also believed to have other health benefits. For example, a specialized treatment called Ayurvedic Panchakarma has been shown to have beneficial effects on the nervous system and promote stress relief.
Interested individuals should inquire about alternative medical centers near them. Recently, the American Botanical Council has announced it will open an Ayurvedic Herbal Garden at its Case Mill Homestead location in Texas.
